Skin Deep

Our documentary: Skin Deep

Our radio trailer:

Our Poster:

Main Product

We were asked to make our own poster, to show how our advertisement campaign may look like if this documentary would air on a channel. When planning our documentary we decided on the channel we would broadcast our documentary on, what we would call it and what day and time we would broadcast it. We decided to include all this in our poster, this would therefore give all the information that the audience needed without over-loading them. We then had to look at how channel 4 posters are set out, we found a recurring theme. The posters included a background image, white writing with a black box background and a channel 4 logo. We therefore had to find an image which would sum up our whole documentary, this was extremely difficult. We then followed the conventions of a channel 4 poster, and tried to imitate it to the best possible quality. Overall, i believe our poster resembles a channel 4 poster and is easily recognisable as a documentary on that channel.

Codes and Conventions

Codes and Conventions of a radio trailer

• These are the codes and conventions of radio trailers:
• The title of the documentary is said
• They always include what channel the documentary is on
• Extracts from the programme are used
• There is a voice over which: may show the narrative or pose questions.
• There is always music
• The advert is always played on an appropriate radio channel; young teenager BBC programmes can be advertised on Radio 1

We analysed two different radio trailers, in order to recognise the different examples of codes and conventions used. This would then be able to give us an insight into the lay out of radio adverts, which in turn would give us an idea of how to set out our own radio advert.

We looked at the radio trailer about the appeal for help towards Madeline McCann. It included a variety of typical conventions such as the narrator broadcasting the time, channel and day it would be broadcasted. In the background there was a rhythmic beat which caused a serious tone to the trailer, in-keeping with the seriousness of the subject. At the end there was the ident, a memorable sound to distinguish its broadcaster.

The next chosen radio trailer to analyse was a documentary about the Queen. The use of rock music in the background was an unsusual sound to include and was un-asscociable with the connotations included with the Queen. The inclusion of voice clips of the Queen, made the trailer subject more recognisable. It also included voice clips of bush and the public, which gave a comparison and variety to the trailer. The trailer did use some conventions, however it did not use a narration; which can be seen as unusual.

We found that the trailer about Madeline McCann used a lot of conventional media codes, in order to keep the tone professional and serious; which is understandable due to the seriousness of the subject. They included recognisable radio conventions, such as the ident and a narrator. However, the Queen trailer was un-conventional. It did not use typical conventions, and tried to add irony to a subject that many find serious. The only conventions used, is that of an example of voice clips. The un-conventional exmaples, are that of rock music playing instead of classical music which could be seen as more fitting with the Queen.

These trailers helped us greatly, and we decided to try and include conventions as well as out inovetive ideas.

Codes and Conventions of Print Adverts

As you can see these are easily recongnisable as channel 4 posters, as they use their typical and recognisable conventions. Such as: writing in a box, one main image, the date, the title, the time and the logo included; all in similar places.
This conventional style make its layout easily recongnisable as that of channel 4's.

We looked at different examples of posters such as:

As you can see this poster is being advertised by an American broadcasting channel, i wanted to look at the difference between Brittish advertisements and American advertisements. As you can see the layout it different, as all the main information is put at the bottom of the poster. However the image is striking and attracts the audience.

Conventions of a Print Advert

One key image

Minimalist use of words- simple and concise

The title is always included

The slogan is also sometimes included on the print advert

The scheduling information always included

Channel logo is prominent and particularly on the right hand side

The print advert is usually a4 landscape size so that it is versatile and can be used at various sizes in newspapers, magazines or on billboards

This is the first draft of our print advert which we drew ourselves. It has the channel 4 logo on the right, the title of the programme on the bottom right and the day the documentary is underneath the title. However, We took the image from our sequence and becuase of this we decided not to use this poster and use an original photo we took ourself.

We took a picture of somebodys knuckles and used photoshop to make it look as though there was tattoos on the knuckles. We decided to use this image as it was original and the audience can see that the documentary is about tattoos. Again we put the channel 4 logo on the right hand side and the title and date on the bottom left in text boxes.

Professional Help

This week I was shown how to create our title, we wanted the title to be interesting so that it would draw the audience in. We photo shopped a tattoo gun, and then followed the outline of our title so that when finished it will look like it is being drawn onto the screen. We all tried to find examples of tattoos that we thought would be interesting for our documentary, we wanted to add a historical theme to our documentary and so we tried to find tattoos throughout time. We also wanted to make the documentary relatable, so we decided to include pictures of celebrity tattoos.

Today I have spoken with a professional about our documentary and he suggests that we include more things off our blog into the documentary. He thinks we should put some vox pops in our documentary. We decided to print pictures off of celebrities with tattoos and extreme tattoos and then show this to people in the street and film their rection. He said that we should show some pictures of us filming to put on our blogs. We have some pictures of magazines that we found in the tattoo parlour on our blogs he says that we should print them out, zoom in on them and use them as cut aways on our documentary. Apart from this he says our documentary is very good so far.

Our Feedback- we felt this was very helpful, we included more vox pops in our piece of the general public as he advised us. We did plan on zooming in on the magazines, but in the end we decided not to as we did not have enough room in the documentary. However we did print off the images of tattoos and people with tattoos to show to the people, when filming the vox pops.

Filming Diary

Friday 8th October 2010
On friday 1st October 2010 we decided on our location for filming a tattoo being done, we phoned up a local tattoo studio and asked if we could film there a week later. We went to the tattoo studio Well inked on Friday the 8th of October 2010. We spent two hours there, from 2 until 4oclock. This gave us plenty of time to set up our equipment and film. While we were waiting for our subject to arrive, we filmed vox pops. We mainly focused on filming the shop in general, it was very interesting and was filled with items for halloween; which added greatly to the mise en scene. We wanted to particularily film examples of tattoos, unfortunately some could not be filmed as it can be seen as plagarism. The subject that we planned to film did not turn up so instead the tattooists husband volunteered to get a tattoo especially for us. We filmed the tattoo being done first, this was so that the interviews would be retrospective and would link to our questions. We spent 30 minutes filming the tattoo, and got some good footage from it. We then filmed the tattooist, we filmed her on the tattoo chair as we felt this would add irony to the documentary. She was a great subject to film and was very detailed in answering our questions. We then filmed her husband, we asked him a couple of questions and had to prompt him at times as he was not as detailed.

We filmed at this location:
Well Inked
8 Bruche Heath Gardens
Padgate, Warrington
WA1 3TP
01925 479071

Thursday 21st October 2010
We filmed at our local museum. A week before we decided that it would be interesting to include some historical facts to our documentary, i then e-mailed and got in contact with a historian from Warrington Museum with knowledge on tattoos. He agreed to let us interview him. So on thursday the 21st of October we went to the museum at 1 oclock to film him. He was very detailed in his answers and was very professional.

We filmed at:
Warrington Museum
Museum street/ Bold street
Warrington
WA1 1JB
01925 442733

Wednesday 10th October 2010
There was only two of my group in, mysef and Leanne. We decided that we would film more for our documentary, perhaps reactions of people when they saw examples of tattoos. This was a good idea and we got great footage to include in our documentary.

We filmed at:
Priestley college
Loushers Lane
Warrington
WA4 6RD
01925 633591

Thursday 16th December 2010

On the 16th of December we decided to film the target audience feedback, as we wanted to see what the audience would think of our documentary. Sophie filmed the audience feedback, where as I asked the questions. We made sure that i was behind the camera when asking the questions, so that the interviewee would be looking off camera.

We filmed at:
Priestley college
Loushers Lane
Warrington
WA4 6RD

Editing

After recording our footage the first thing we had to do is capture the footage in order to put it on the timeline to edit it.

Primary and secondary research

Location
We had to find a place to film our documentary, when we decided on the subject of tattoos we immediately wanted to film in a tattoo parlour. We felt this would be intriguing and perhaps more different. It took a lot of effort and we got turned down five times, we phoned Saz's tattoo, Voodoo tattoo and Ashes tattoo (aswell as others) and we were immediately turned down. this was due to the worry of plagarism (stealing ideas for tattoos). Finally we rang 'Well inked' and they immediately agreed.

Primary Research

Well Inked
8 Bruche Heath Gardens
Padgate, Warrington, Cheshire WA1 3TP
01925 479 071

We were allowed to film anywhere we wanted in the parlour and the owners were extremely helpful.

Interviewees
We agreed with the owner from the beginning that we would like to interview her. We felt this would be interesting, as she is a woman and this is unusual.

We also asked her if she could ask clients, if we could film them getting a tattoo. She was very helpful and finally a man said yes. However on the day the man did not turn up, so the woman's husband volunteered to get a tattoo. This was not planned but was extremely helpful. We wanted to interview the person getting tattooed as this would be interesting. We also wanted to interview a professional on tattoos and perhaps people either getting tattos or that have them.

As for the historian we e-mailed him and called him, to arrange a date for filming.

Props

We wanted an ironic viewpoint when it came to the interviews so we decided to ask the tattoist to sit in the tattooing chair. We felt this would be a good stimulus for the audience, and would be interesting. We also chose a time when there would be halloween decorations out, which was also a great stimulus for our documentary. It gave a more eerie feel, and it was particularly dark in the tatto parlour.

Secondary research

Statistics
17% of those with tattoos have considered having it removed
36% of 18-25 year olds have at least one tattoo
61% of people say that the reputation of a tattoo artist and tattoo studio is the most important factor when selecting who will tattoo them and where they will get tattooed
36% of those with tattoos are between 25-29 years old
Tattooing is the united state's 6th fastest growing retail business
In 1936 10 million Americans (about 6%) have at least one tattoo

Archive Material

We want to keep the documentary relevant so we decided to use images of covers from tattoo magazines, so that people know where they can get more information about tattoos. It also allows those that read the magazines to relate to the documentary.

These images were taken from Google images, when typing in tattoo magazine covers.

We also wanted to use images of tattoos, both unusual and popular. This was to give examples and link to the subject being discussed.

These were found on google images, as were these:

We wanted to include celebrity tattoos into our documentary as we wanted to give the audience what they wanted. People said they were influenced by celebrities with tattoos.

We also plan on including some video footage related to tattoos, perhaps movies with tattoos in, or perhaps music videos with people with tattoos. This is to show how tattoos effect the media.

This video is from Jordin Sparks. It has a lot of mention to tattoos, it uses as analogy. This is done because people can relate to tattoos as it is a contemporary subject.

People also use tattoos as a way of raising awareness. Years ago tattoos were seen as a big deal, now people are quick to get them. This could be due to ways of removing tattoos that wasn't available 50 years ago.

We got these videos off youtube.

For music we plan on using a more heavier sound as it will fit in well with the style. However in some parts, instead of music we will put in the sound of the needle in the background.

This is a lot more heavier, we feel this may fit in well in parts.

We feel this may be good also, because it mentions tattoos and has a good beat.

This is a famous heavy metal song, so people may find it easy to relate to it.

Formal Proposal

Formal Proposal for Documentary: Skin Deep

Our documentary will be based around the topic of tattoos; we will look at the public’s obsession with getting them and the reasons why we are fascinated by them. It will be an objective documentary, and will give an un-biased view of tattoos. A voice over will be put in to the documentary, in order to fully explain the subject. It will show both the positives and negatives of tattoos. This will be an investigative documentary; it will both inform the audience about tattoos as well as hopefully entertaining them. We would aim for this documentary to be filmed on channel 4; at about 8pm.This will attract a wide range of ages as the audience, so it would therefore reach out to more people. We felt that channel 4 would be an appropriate channel to broadcast on, as their audience is usually of a younger age. Tattoos are widely popular in the younger generation, so channel 4 would have the perfect audience. Our scheduled time was 8pm, as this is a time that students tend to relax after college or university. We would aim for the documentary to be shown on a week night, as this is the time that most students will be watching. Our target audience is the younger generation, perhaps those between the ages of 15 to 25 as we believe these are the people who are more interested in the subject of tattoos. Our primary research consisted of us trying to find a place to film our documentary, it took a lot of effort and we had to phone 5 tattoo parlours, finally someone said yes. We had to ask the tattooist if we could film someone getting a tattoo, in order to do this we had to follow certain procedures. The tattooist had to phone her clients and ask if we would be allowed to film them, we also had to discuss a date and time that we would film. We also created 30 questionnaires to give out to people in our local area. These questionnaires asked them questions on what they thought should be in the documentary and what interested them. This was extremely valuable to our final decision, and it gave the audience a chance to give their own ideas. Our secondary research consisted of us finding research to include in our documentary, such as statistics and the history of tattoos. The structure of our documentary will follow a linear narrative, as we will first look at the history of tattoos and then look at tattoos today. Our main focus will be on tattoos in the 21st century, as we feel this effects and interests more people.

The documentary will start with a flash of images related to the subject of tattoos, with music in the background. We will then proceed to the title, which in this case is ‘Skin Deep’. We felt this was an appropriate title for a documentary about tattoos, as it implies what it is about without giving to much information. This gives a sense of mystery, which will hopefully attract the audience. A voiceover will then start and will explain the history of tattoos, perhaps with archive images or an interview with a professional. We will then see interviews with people who have had tattoos or plan on getting them. After this visual stimulus occurs, a video of a tattoo being done will come on screen. Perhaps with a voiceover explaining the process. The interview with the tattoo artist will then be put on, with her name and profession put underneath. It will then proceed to showing a bit of the tattoo being done, with particular focus on the subjects face when in pain. The needle noise will play in the background. The interview with the man who got a tattoo with then progress. There will then be music and blackness. The title of the documentary will then come up and underneath the title it will say end of part one. It will then fade to black.

The resource requirements for our project are:
• Camera to film the documentary
• Microphone for the speech and voiceover
• Tripod to hold camera

Timeline and storyboard

This is the timeline we used, although we plan on changing parts as we want to make the documentary the best it can be. However, it was a great help when filming our scenes.

This is the storyboard we decided to base our documentary on, although we followed this when filming we plan on changing the storyboard in editing as we have thoguht up of new ideas which will make our documentary more interesting.

Videoed reaction to Questionaire

Results of questions shown in Graphs

We asked people what age they were, in order to help us understand what our target audience wanted.

From this graph below, you can see that the majority of people wanted us to include the video of a tattoo being done. We asked people what they would like to see in a documentary about tattoos. We then took this into account when filming our documentary.

You can tell from these graphs that the majority of people said that they were not influenced by celebrities with tattoos. We wanted to see if this topic affected our target audience, which shows that some are influenced where as the majority are not.

We asked them which celebrity tattoos they liked, as you can see there was a range of results, however Cheryl Cole was above the rest.

We also asked if people were interested in documentaries, we found that their was an equal amount for either side. Some people seemed to like documentaries where as some didn't. The other graph shows if they would be interested in our documentary

The large majority of people like black coloured tatoos, this could reflect the way times have changed. In the past sailors usually had coloured tatoos, where as many younger people today said that they wanted black tribal tattoos.

We also asked people where they would get a tattoo, whether it was within Warrington or outside. The majority chose a tattoo parlour marked as 'other' this was usually 'LA ink' studios that are advertised on shows on MTV. People also said that within Warrington, they would go to Voodoo tattoo studio in Warrington.

Brainstorming

We agreed on the idea of tattoos, as we felt this would be an interesting topic to research. It would also reach the hoped target audience as it is usually a subject discussed by the younger generation. We agreed as a group on this topic and discussed possible ideas for the documentary. We all got a say and ultimately came up with a good idea.
